Ships running engines when at quay results in large emissions from greenhouse-gases and nitrogen oxides. The latter being a large deterent to air quality, which continues to be an issue in several large and smaller cities. In adition running the engines at low load at quay increases wear and maintenance on the engines. This can be avoided by connecting the ship to shore power at the harbour, or using a battery pack which is charged during transit. MHTech can simulate the power consumption both with shore power, and with batteries. We can also simulate the transit between harbours to asses the required charging power if a battery solution is used.
One way to cut emissions is to use shore power instead of gas turbines on the platform. However, there are concerns about blackouts, and the need for back-up systems. As gas-turbines require time to start these are often operating at low load instead of being shut off completely. MHTech can simulate the power consumption both during normal operation, and during a loss of shore power, to asses the carbon-footpring impact, and the need for back-up solutions.
